A Not So Perfect Spring Day
Have you ever felt like the world was crashing around you, and even God had abandoned you? This happened to me. It all started on a perfect spring day this year.
We’d decided it was time to sell our house. I was determined this time I wouldn’t stress over every detail and every showing. I was in a frenzy to get it cleaned, fixed, and perfect for the first day on the market. Then my youngest got sick.
Very sick. In a whirl of tests and doctor appointments, I tried to stay calm and leave it in God’s hands. But when the doctor walked in and said she would not be going home from the appointment, I went to the bathroom to cry as I called my husband.
They scheduled emergency surgery that day for a tumor the size of a small watermelon in her abdomen. She was only weeks from high school graduation. I managed to stay calm after my bout in the bathroom. What was going to happen?
Another child of mine was about to graduate college. I had a book which had just released and another one with edits due. Upcoming book-signings were on the horizon. Broken toilets and pipes needed fixing. Another child of mine was considering moving back home for a short while. I wanted to collapse.
The more I thought about what was happening, the more my world seemed to crash around me. Where was God in all of it? Had He decided to dump and run?
What if the test on the tumor came back as cancerous?
Sitting in that hospital waiting room, while my baby had major surgery put some perspective into it all. God wrapped his arms around me and told me it was going to be all right. Even if tests came back bad. Even if the broken pipes created a huge expense. Even if the house didn’t sell. This peace was like none other. God hadn’t abandoned me. He hadn’t left me to figure it all out on my own. He was there and always would be.
Thanks be to Him for her tests coming back negative, and graduations going off without a hitch, edits turned in mostly on time, and a house that had a contract in three weeks. God is great.
Actually, He’s the best! In the worst of times and the best. As He says in Ecclesiastes 3:1, To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under Heaven.

I can feel the weight of emotion in your story, Erin. And I’ve trekked across similar ground over the past several months…Our house (fixer upper) is on the market, we graduated a high school and college student, on-going needs from the other two.
