As I recall last week, I mentioned that my dog never learned to play. Well, the other morning, she was making grunting noises, and I went out to check on her. She was tossing a bone in the air and chasing it. The minute she saw me, she stopped. Get the feeling she’s been playing me for sympathy. LOL
But don’t we do the same with our Christian friends? We behave differently when no one’s looking. If we have to wait in line at the grocer, we grumble to the woman behind us. But if the minister walks up, we’re all smiles and “God bless yous.”
Matthew 28:20 reminds us … that I [Jesus] have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age. We tend to forget that no matter where we go, no matter who we’re with, Jesus is there with us also.
And we should act accordingly.
The greatest single cause of atheism in the world today is Christians: who acknowledge Jesus with their lips, walk out the door, and deny Him by their lifestyle. That is what an unbelieving world simply finds unbelievable. – Brennan Manning, Author
Most of us behave differently in front of a non-believing friend than we do our family, and different from them all than we do our minister. But we should always remember that Jesus is beside us. The sooner we realize that, the more we will act the same with everyone.
Maybe we should practice talking to Him in the car, look side-to-side in the checkout line, or glance sideways when we see an annoying acquaintance walking our way. Pretend you can see Jesus beside you. What would His reaction be in your circumstances? As Christians, our reaction should be the same.
