What are You Basing Your Hope On?

My pastor just finished up a three week sermon on The Apostles’ Creed. For those of you who don’t know it, the Apostles’ Creed is:

I believe in God, the Father Almighty, the Creator of heaven and earth, and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived of the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He arose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty, whence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.

The Creed wasn’t officially created until one hundred years or more after the apostles died. Yet some believe each of the Apostles came up with a specific creed.

That got me wondering, which one did Judas write? Maybe it was “the forgiveness of sin”. I can’t help but think he knew deep inside he was going to betray Jesus so he based his creed on something he hoped would “get him off”.

No matter what you have done in the past, God will forgive you if you ask for it. 1 John 1:9 says If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just, and will forgive us our sins and purify us from unrighteousness.

Judas committed suicide not too long after he betrayed Jesus. Did he ask for forgiveness? Was it granted? According to this Bible verse, if he asked for forgiveness, he was forgiven. Have you ever done anything as sinful as betray Jesus? Then I guess you have a better chance of getting into Heaven than Judas did.

What are you pinning your hopes on? Maybe you think you’ll live long enough to announce your belief. I’m sure a lot of young people believe they have time. Then a drunk driver crosses the road and slams into them. Don’t put it off any longer. Ask Jesus into your heart and forgiveness of your sins. You’ll feel a lot lighter on your feet when you put all your hope in Jesus.
