The Story Behind the Song

I’m going to keep this short because I know we’re all busy this last week before Christmas. I thought I’d share the story behind one of my favorite Christmas songs, “Do You Hear What I Hear.”

This song and music were written by Gloria Shayne and Noel Regney, the husband and wife team of such songs as “ Goodbye Cruel World,” sung by James Darren. Noel was a Frenchman forced to be a Nazi soldier when the Germans invaded France. He soon deserted the Nazis and joined the French Resistance.

I always thought this song had to do with Jesus, but it was actually written as a plea for peace during the Cuban Missile Crisis in the early 1960’s.  It’s a good song for peace today as well.

I love how some of our favorite songs have such a unique background.

Here’s a wonderful rendition of the song the awesome Celtic Woman. I hope you enjoy it.

Merry Christmas.
