Holding Tight to God

I just returned from a trip to Idaho to see my mom. It’s pretty much a seven-hour plane ride, not counting layovers. And I’m a terrible flyer which makes it seem longer. Ask anyone who’s ever had to fly with me and they’ll tell you, I get nervous, refuse to move from my seat, even if we’re still on the tarmac, etc. It’s just something I’ve never enjoyed.

This time was a bit different.

Instead of relying on myself, I asked my Bible study group to pray for me. I also had a wonderful Christian song (nine minutes long, you can listen to it below) to help with the takeoff – my least favorite part of flying. While I wasn’t completely at peace, I was definitely calmer. It only makes sense. After all, Philippians 4:6-7 tells me to not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

Don’t get me wrong, I was still a bit anxious, but not like in the past. Usually, I’m a nervous wreck the day before up until take-off. This time, I didn’t really start to get nervous until we began boarding the plane. I was even able to get some sleep the night before which probably helped with my anxiety.

Relying on God in every situation helps with any anxiety we are going through. We just don’t always turn to Him first. But, as Christians, we should.

Next time I fly, I’ll definitely ask for prayer again and listen to uplifting Christian music. Who knows, I might eventually get to enjoy the experience. Okay, maybe not, but at least I won’t dislike it as much.

If you or someone you know is in need of prayer this week, please leave a comment. We’d be more than happy to pray for you. And if this post moved you in some way, please feel free to share it.
