The Song that Paused a War

There are some songs that hit you right in the heart and will automatically make you smile. With its wonderful words about peace and goodwill, Silent Night is one of those songs.

World War I

While the words were written in the 1700s, the music wasn’t composed until 1818 by Franz Xaver Gruber in Austria. This song has now been recorded over 700 times in the last 36 years.

However, the real story that gets this song included in my list of those with an interesting history is the tale of the Christmas Truce of World War I in 1914. A German soldier sang the song in both German and English which encouraged both sides to sing Christmas songs and exchange gifts on Christmas day. This story was actually used in the commercial below in 2014. The video now has over twenty-one million views on YouTube.

We need more songs that evoke this type of emotion in all people. More songs about caring for others, like Jesus instructed, might just make this world a much better place for us all.

Here is another YouTube video that also has over twenty-one million views. This is one of the most wonderful renditions I’ve heard.  I hope you enjoy it.
